Meische Brodsky was born in Kremenchuk, Poltava, Ukraine on August 15, 1877, the son of Hillel and Sarah. His Hebrew name was Moshe Chaim. He was later known as Morris in America. Morris worked as a painter and interior decorator along with his brothers. Morris married Yetta Stavropolsky in Kharkiv, Ukraine on March 22, 1898 on the Julian calendar that Ukraine used at the time. The Hebrew date was 11 Nissan, which is April 3, 1898 on the Gregorian calendar. Yetta was born in Kremenchuk on March 23, 1880. Morris and Yetta had at least four children in Kharkiv before they came to America.
In 1906, Morris and Yetta came to America on the SS Haverford from Liverpool to Philadelphia. They traveled with their four young children, Morris's brothers Harry and William, and two of Yetta's siblings. They were met in Philadelphia by Morris's sister, Rachel.
In America, Morris continued to work as a painter and decorator for several years. Morris and Yetta had nine more children in America, several of whom died in early childhood. Yetta's siblings who came to America with them lived with them for a while, using the name Pollock. They later took the name Pollan, thus Yetta's children sometimes gave Pollan as her maiden name.
In 1921, Morris suffered from a brain cyst and underwent a craniotomy. He died from post-operative complications on June 27, 1921. He was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Collingdale, Pennsylvania.
Yetta survived Morris for 40 years but never remarried. She worked for a time as a buyer for a store. She died on October 7, 1961 of malignant melanoma and was buried with Morris at Mount Lebanon.
Rachel Brodsky was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Her Social Security application says that she was born on on March 25, 1897, but that was a year before her parents married. More likely her date of birth was January 5, 1899, which appeared on her husband's naturalization papers. Rachel came to Philadelphia with her parents on the SS Haverford in 1906. In America, she was known as Rose.
Rose married Isadore Winokur in Philadelphia in 1916. Isadore was the younger brother of Louis Winokur, who married Rose's aunt Fannie Brodsky. Isadore was born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine on February 10, 1894, the same town where Morris and his brotheres were born. He immigrated to New York with his family on the Moskova in 1907. On the ship manifest, he was identified as Leiwi Winokurow.
Rose and Isadore lived in Philadelphia for a while, where Isadore worked as a painter and interior decorator like Rose's father and uncles. Their first two daughters were born in Philadelphia. Later, they moved to Brooklyn, where Isadore worked as butcher. Isadore later returned to work as a painter and interior decorator. Rose and Isadore had two more daughters in Brooklyn, and Isadore was naturalized there in 1925.
Isadore died on March 1, 1982 and was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, New York, apparently no relation to the Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Pennsylvania where Rose's parents are buried. Rose died on January 16, 1990 and was buried with Isadore at New York's Mount Lebanon Cemetery .

Yetta survived him by 25 years but never remarried. She died on New Year's Eve, 1994/5, at the age of 94, when she and an elderly friend were struck by a hit-and-run driver while crossing Bustleton Avenue in Philadelphia to have dinner across the street. She was buried with Emanuel at Mount Lebanon. Her son told me that Yetta was in good health at the time and would have lived to 100 if not for the accident. The driver, who was driving with a suspended license, had no insurance, and falsely reported his car as stolen after the accident, received only a minimal sentence of 3-6 months. The story caused outrage around the state and led to a new law increasing the penalties for vehicular homicide by drivers with suspended licenses.
