Hillel Brodsky

Hillel Brodsky lived in Ukraine. He may have been known by the Yiddish name Hendel, which appeared on his son Morris's marriage record. Hillel married a woman named Sarah Goldberg1. Sarah was born around 1856, the daughter of Samuel Goldberg. They had at least seven children who came to Philadelphia in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, there are few records available from that place and time to give any insight into their lives.

Hillel probably died before 1905, because one of his sons named a son Hillel in that year and Jews traditionally don't name children after living relatives. He certainly died before September 1906, when Sarah came to Philadelphia as a widow on the Friesland with daughters Celia and Fannie. Sarah briefly lived in New York with newly-married daughter Fannie, but returned to Philadelphia where she died of stomach cancer on September 2, 1915. She was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery outside of Philadelphia, where children Morris, Abraham and Celia were later buried.

Footnotes

1. Son Harry's Social Security application gives his mother's maiden name as Winokur, but daughter Fannie's marriage certificate gives it as Goldberg. The marriage record is more likely correct because Sarah was living at the time of the marriage and signed her consent to it.
