Leib Winokur

I have now established that Louis Winokur who married Fannie Brodsky, is the brother of Isadore Winokur married Rose Brodsky. This page discusses their shared family. I have not yet determined whether they are related to Morris Nathan Winokur. They did come from the same town in Ukraine where the Brodskys came from, but Morris was apparently not from that town.

Leib Winokurow was born in Kremenchuk, Poltava, Ukraine in 1861. He worked as a painter and interior decorator. In Ukraine, he married Masse Lisansky, and they had at least five children in Ukraine. Leib was supposed to come to Philadelphia with Suse (a man) and Golde Winokur on the Friesland in March, 1906 but his name was crossed off that manifest. Instead, Leib came to New York in May 1907 with Masse and their children Isadore and Taube on the Moskwa in May 1907. They were met in America by a son whose name began with S. This could be Suse who came to Philadelphia a year earlier, or could be another child not yet identified. In America, they used the surname Winokur. Masse used the given name Marsha. I have found no further record of Taube in America and do not know what name she used here.

Louis and Marsha initially lived in Manhattan and later in Brooklyn. Louis continued to work as a painter in America until he was about 70, when he became disabled.

Marsha died in Brooklyn on August 14, 1948 in her 90s and was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, New York. Louis died on February 28, 1955, also in his 90s, and was buried with Marsha at Mount Lebanon.

Children of Leib Winokur and Marsha Lisansky:

Generation #2

Louis Winokur

Louis Winokur was born in Kremenchuk, Ukraine, like the Brodskys. He usually claimed the birthdate 15 May 1886 although he claims various dates in May in 1886, 1887 and 1888. He worked mostly as a shirt ironer.

Louis married Fannie Brodsky in Philadelphia on December 24, 1914. Fannie was born in Ukraine in September, 1889 and came to Philadelphia with her mother in September 1906. Louis and Fannie moved back to New York shortly after the marriage, to a home at 14 Meserole Street in Brooklyn where they lived for at least 25 years. That home was not far from where Leib and Marsha lived by 1930.

Isadore Winokur

Leiwÿ Winokurow was born on Kremenchuk, Poltava, Ukraine on February 10, 1894. He came to America with his parents and sister Taube at the age of 15 on the Moskwa in May 1907. In America, he used the name Isadore Winokur and worked as a painter and interior decorator.

Isadore lived in Philadelphia for a while, where he met and married Rose Brodsky. Rose was born as Rachel Brodsky in Kharkiv, Ukraine on January 5, 1899 and came to Philadelphia with her parents on the SS Haverford in 1906. Rose and Isadore moved to Brooklyn around 1925, living a couple of miles from Isadore's parents.
