William Howard Brod (Welvel Brodsky)

Welvel Brodsky was born in Ukraine on June 18, 1886. He is probably the one standing toward the left in this picture, but that is only a guess based on the fact that he is the youngest of the four known brothers and that one looks youngest. In 1906, came to America on the SS Haverford from Liverpool to Philadelphia with his brothers Morris and Harry and Morris's wife and children. In America, he was known as William Howard, and in the early 1910s, he shortened his surname to Brod.

William married Mamie Shenkin in Philadelphia on August 21, 1908, a week after his sister Celia married Mamie's brother William Shankin. The two couples were married by the same rabbi.1 Mamie was born in Poltava, Ukraine on September 15, 1887. William and Mamie had four children in Philadelphia.

William worked with his brothers in the painting and interior decorating business for several years, but he became concerned about the medical consequences of breathing paint. He and his family moved to Los Angeles where William took up business as a furniture salesman, later owning and managing his own furniture business.

William died in Los Angeles on May 7, 1942. In 1957, Mamie remarried to Hyman Schulman. She died on February 22, 1967 as Mamie Brod Schulman.

Footnotes

1. Both couples were married by Rabbi Abraham Hirsh Ershler (sometimes spelled Erschler), a well-respected rabbi in Philadelphia but one who had a reputation for being tardy in providing returns of marriages to the city within 30 days as required by law. These two Brodsky-Shankin marriage returns were among the 600 returns that the rabbi's widow found in the basement after the rabbi's death in November 1910. It is clear that these marriages were part of that pile because both returns were stamped as filed on March 28, 1911, the day before this scandal was reported in the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Lancaster New Era.
