Abraham Brodsky was born in Kremenchuk, Poltava, Ukraine on June 12, 1879, the son of Hillel Brodsky, according to his death certificate and his gravestone. In Ukraine, he married Ida Scher (spelled in various ways in America). Ida was born in Kremenchuk around 1885. Abraham migrated on September 14, 1906 from Libau to New York on the Smolensk. His contact in America was his brother, "M Brodsky," probably Morris, who arrived a few months earlier. Abraham came to America alone; Ida came later. Abraham moved to Philadelphia and worked as a painter, like his brothers. Later, he worked as flour salesman.
In Philadelphia, Abraham and Ida had two daughters. Ida apparently passed away some time between March 1912, when she appears on his naturalization papers, and 1918, when a different wife appears on his World War I draft registration. She may be the Anna Brodsky, wife of Abrahm Brodsky, who died of tuberculosis in Philadelphia on May 20, 1915, and was buried at Har Judah Cemetery. Abraham's name was spelled that way on the ship manifest when he came to America and the informant's handwriting on the death certificate looks a bit like Abraham's signature on his World War I draft registration.
Abraham remarried to Lena Breslow in New Jersey in 1915. Lena was born in "Russia" around 1889. She came to the marriage with two children of her own from a previous marriage, about the same age as Abraham's two daughters. Lena came to America with her children around 1913, but the father of her children never came to America. Lena's children took Abraham's surname, though it is not clear whether he legally adopted them or simply raised them as his own. The children identified Abraham as their father on various documents, and Abraham's children's obituaries described Lena's children as their siblings. Abraham and Lena had two children together, making the total number of children in the household six.
Abraham died at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia on January 25, 1941 of cardiac insufficiency and myocardial degeneration. The cause of death was apparently a bit of a mystery and required an inquest. He was buried at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Pennsylvania, the same cemetery as his brother Morris. Lena survived him by 30 years but she never remarried. She died on February 1, 1971 and was buried at Mount Jacob Cemetery, across the street from Mount Lebanon, where many members of her Breslow family were also buried.
Becky Brodsky was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 12, 1907, the daughter of Abraham Brodsky and Ida Scher. She was later known as Rebecca, Elizabeth and Betty. She worked for a time as a bookkeeper and later as a shopkeeper in Washington DC.
She married Hyman Krause in Arlington, Virginia on May 26, 1948. Hyman was born in New York City in 1902. Hyman worked in public relations in Los Angeles, California. It is unlikely that they had any children because Betty was already 40 years old when they married.
I have found no further information about Betty and Hyman. I know that Betty was living in 1993 when her sister Sally died, but nothing else.
Minnie Brodsky was born in Philadelphia on January 19, 1909, the daughter of Abraham Brodsky and Ida Scher. Later, she was known as Sally and kept Minnie as a middle name. Sally married Walter Zimmerman around 1930. Walter was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania on February 13, 1908, and the couple lived in Lock Haven for many years. Walter served in the Navy in World War II. They had one daughter who is still living.
Sally and Walter divorced in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Walter moved to Miami Beach, Florida, where he remarried in 1967 and died on June 14, 1971. Sally remained single, but kept the Zimmerman name. She moved to California, where worked at MGM Records.
Sally died in Orange County, California on February 12, 1993. She was buried at Pacific View Memorial Park in Newport Beach.
Anna Brodsky was born in Russia on April 28, 1907, the daughter of Lena Breslow. She came to America with her mother around 1913. Lena married Abraham when Anna was young, and Abraham may have legally adopted her.
Anna married Bernard Clayman in Philadelphia in 1931. Bernard was known as Barney. Barney was born in Long Island, New York on May 1, 1906. He worked as a butcher. They had two sons.
Barney died of acute pancreatitis in Philadelphia on February 18, 1952. He and Anna were apparently separated at the time, but they were not divorced and Anna served as the administrator of Barney's estate. Anna survived Barney by more than 40 years but she never remarried. She lived in Las Vegas, where her sons lived. She died there on November 24, 1994.
Max Brodsky was born in Russia on August 26, 1906, the son of Lena Breslow. He came to America with his mother around 1913. Lena married Abraham when Max was young, and Abraham may have legally adopted him. Abraham was identified as his father on his death certificate.
Max served in the Army during World War II. After the war, he moved to Chicago, where he worked in the printing business and founded Lith-O-Roll, a company that supplied rollers for printing presses.
In Chicago, Max married Beatrice Gordon on May 9, 1951. Beatrice was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 2, 1915. She had performed as a mezzo-soprano with the New York Metropolitan Opera before she came to Chicago in the 1940s. In Chicago, she worked as a buyer for various department stores. and later helped Max run Lith-O-Roll. Max and Beatrice had two children.
Max died of a cerebrovascular accident at home on March 26, 1995, at the age of 86. Beatrice died in Chicago on October 9, 2001.
Howard Brodsky was born in Philadelphia on August 8, 1922, the son of Abraham Brodsky and Lena Breslow. He was known as Hank. Hank served in the Army during World War II.
Hank married Leona Silverman, a divorcee, in Dade County, Florida in August 1956. Leona was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 15, 1918. They had two children.
They lived the rest of their lives in Miami. Hank died on March 7, 1983 in Miami. Leona died on October 11, 1990 in Miami.
