Fannie Brodsky Winokur

Fannie Brodsky was born in Ukraine in September, 1889. She came to Philadelphia in September 1906 on the Friesland with her mother and her sister Celia. She married Louis Winokur in Philadelphia on December 24, 1914. Louis was born in Kremenchuk, Poltava, Ukraine on May 15, 1886, the son of Leib Winokur and Marsha Lisansky. Louis was the older brother of Isadore Winokur, who married Fannie's niece Rose Brodsky. Louis was born in Kremenchuk, Poltava, Ukraine, like the Brodskys, on May 22, 1887. He worked as a shirt ironer. They had three children though one died very young.

Louis and Fannie moved to Brooklyn shortly after the marriage, to a home at 14 Meserole Street where they lived for many years. Fannie's mother Sarah lived with them there in the 1915 New York Census, and they appeared there in every census up to 1940. Louis filled out a World War II draft registration at that address in 1942. Fannie was naturalized in her own name while living at that address in 1944.

I have found no record that is definitely them after 1944. Louis is quite probably the Louis Winokur who died in October 1984, because that one gives his date of birth as May 15, 1886, as Louis often did. It is quite possible that Louis lived that long (to age 98): both of his parents lived into their 90s. There is a New York City death record for a Fannie Winokur on July 28, 1959 that is about the right age to be her, but that is not at all certain. She lived in the Bronx, and the Meserole Street address is in Brooklyn, but the Louis Winokur who died in October 1984 also lived in the Bronx.

Generation #3

Sylvia Winokur Gordon Cohen

Sylvia Winokur was born in Brooklyn on September 27, 1915. At the time she applied for a Social Security Number, her name was Sylvia Gordon but the application clearly identifies her as the daughter of Louis and Fannie. In 1977 Social Security listed her name as Sylvia Gordon Cohen, and later as Sylvia Cohen. Social Security indicates that she was living in Pompano Beach when she died in October 1997. Because these names are so incredibly common, it is impossible to find any other records definitely related to her.
